I get impatient with measuring the effectiveness of ministry with data related to worship attendance and membership. However, the mission of the United Methodist Church is “to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” If we are staying true to this mission, then we need to be aware of worship attendance trends and the number of new members we are welcoming. We also need to ask ourselves how our life as disciples is resulting in the transformation of life outside the walls of the church. So I ask you to pray for God to show us how we can serve the people in the neighborhoods of Merritt Island more effectively. In the 21st century, the church cannot expect to grow just by being welcoming when people come to us. Instead, we must be willing to go into the world, build relationships with new people, and share the love of Christ with them. This is God’s calling on all of our lives.
This Sunday, February 3, Pastor Beth will offer a message entitled “Transformational Silence.” She will share with us some of the principles of Stephen Ministry and how these principles are important for how we all offer God’s love to a needy world. So come to worship expecting a new encounter with the Holy Spirit, and wear your name tag to help build new relationships.
I will be leading a new member class beginning at 10:30 am on Sunday in the fellowship hall. If you are not a member of Grace and want to learn more, come and be a part of this class! If you know someone who attends but is not a member of the church, please let that person know about the class. It is a perfect place to ask questions about the United Methodist Church and about Grace.
I look forward to seeing you Sunday –
Pastor Steve
