Dear Grace Family:
The past two weekends here at Grace have been extra special. Two weeks ago we hosted the women’s Via de Cristo weekend, and the joy of celebrating the love of Christ was palpable on the campus. I hope more Grace members will attend one of these retreat weekends in the future. Those of us who have participated can attest to the spiritual power of the experience. Last weekend, I enjoyed watching many of our families with children attending our summer kickoff party. The food, weather, and overall atmosphere were excellent!
If you want to learn more about the recent General Conference of the United Methodist Church, there are several articles on our Florida Conference website at FLUMC.org. I am confident that the changes instituted will result in the United Methodist Church becoming more inclusive and welcoming, while also allowing individuals and churches to follow conscience and the Holy Spirit’s guidance in any major decisions. The United Methodist Church has a well-developed theology that will continue to appeal to thinking people of all ages and contexts. (I am biased because being United Methodist is practically in my DNA, and everything from John Wesley’s theology to Charles Wesley’s hymns inform my heart).
This Sunday, May 12, we will recognize our mothers in worship. It is important to remember that not all of us have positive experiences with mothers or motherhood, so sensitivity is appropriate. The scripture passages for Sunday are Psalm 47: 1-4 and Luke 24: 44-53. I am working on a message entitled “Finally Getting It” based upon how the disciples finally experienced joy at the time of Jesus’ ascension. Notice that it took a while for them to understand and follow.
I am looking forward to preaching at Grace this Mother’s Day weekend! Thanks for your prayers and support of your church. If you love this church, invite friends to worship!
