Rachel Held Evans was a young woman who wrote extensively about her Christian faith. She died before the age of 40, but she offered timeless wisdom in her writings. Regarding the kingdom of God, she referred to it as “a group of outcasts and oddballs gathered at a table, not because they are rich or worthy or good, but because they are hungry, because they said yes. And there’s always room for more.” This vision helps us to understand the importance of humility in living out our faith. I hope you appreciate it as much as I do.
Next Wednesday, October 11, the pumpkins arrive! Our congregation has the privilege of welcoming so many people onto our campus every year during pumpkin patch. I encourage you to sign up for shifts in the patch and to use the time to greet people, love people, and let them see Christ through you. People in this community appreciate the efforts that we put into this outreach.
Do you participate in a Sunday school class, small group Bible study, or group service activity? If not, I encourage you to attend one of these groups. It is a great way to make new friends. More importantly, it is the way to engage our faith at a deeper, more mature level. I believe that you will bless others and they will bless you in the process. Just try several groups until you find the one that fits your personality and interests. We have a variety of options at Grace!
This Sunday, October 8, our scripture passages are 1 Chronicles 16:24 and Acts 1:8. Pastor Beth is preparing a message entitled “Will You Please Go Now!” I know the message will offer some insights into the Red Bird mission trip from this week. Pastor Beth and several of our members are working on a home renovation in Kentucky this week, and I look forward to hearing about their experience. Grace has sent groups to Red Bird for years, and we value this United Methodist outreach ministry.
I see that the weather forecast for this weekend is excellent, so let’s make the effort to worship together and thank God for our many blessings. See you Sunday!
