When I was much younger, people older than me told me that time would seem to move even faster as I got older. They were right! Here we are in the last quarter of 2023, and before we can blink, we will be in the midst of the holiday season. My prayer for all of us between now and then is that we can slow down and cherish our lives, our community, and a God who loves us unconditionally, one day at a time.
Will you join me in a daily prayer for the people of Israel, the Palestinian territory, and everyone affected by the war? Seeing the news of terrible violence reminds me that so many people in this world live in fear for their lives. We cannot eliminate the violence, but we can offer daily intercessory prayer for those who are suffering. Our prayer is one way that we keep our hearts tender and open to the movement of the Holy Spirit. Let’s make this prayer a daily priority.
This Sunday, October 15, is laity Sunday in the United Methodist Church. This is a day for us to recognize that the ongoing life of the church is dependent upon the lay members of the congregation. The clergy have important responsibilities, but the ongoing functioning of the church requires dedicated lay persons. Fortunately, we have many such people at Grace.
Our lay leader, Catherine Harwood, will be sharing a message Sunday at both services. The scripture passages for Sundayare Psalm 100: 1-5 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Catherine’s message title is “Gratitude: Thanking God When You’d Rather Ask Why.” Catherine is our faithful lay leader and an excellent speaker. Her message title addresses a sentiment with which I am sure many of us can relate. You don’t want to miss her message!
After Sunday’s 11am service, remember to come to the pumpkin patch for family fun, food, and time together. I look forward to seeing you there!
