The 80/20 Rule

Recently, I read an article entitled, “The 80/20 Rule is a Problem for churches.” The author, an experienced pastor, explains that even though it is a common observation that 20% of the people in a church do 80% of the work, this is not good for churches. This is because the gospel message, and the life of the early church in Acts, calls for an entire community of believers to pitch in, with full engagement as close to 100% as possible.

Thinking about this, I am pleased that at Grace I think significantly more than 20% of our congregation is actively involved. However, as pastors we sometimes overlook the great ideas and talents that people bring. So if you have a ministry idea and need encouragement or guidance, let us pastors know how we can help! We are all in ministry together.

As we approach the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend, I invite you to answer Dr. King’s probing question: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, “What are you doing for others?” Taking the time to ask this question often and to act on it will keep us so busy that there will be no time to feel sorry for ourselves! At his essence, Dr. King was a preacher first, and his civil rights emphasis was rooted in his Christian faith.

This Sunday, January 14, the scripture passages are Colossians 3: 12-13 and Mark 12: 28-31. Pastor Gary is starting a three week series, and the message for Sunday is entitled, “New Year: How to Love.”  The series includes three separate “how to” messages, and the content will be practical. You don’t want to miss these messages!

May God continue to bless you and your families. I look forward to seeing you Sunday!
