The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year

Dear Grace Family,

This Sunday is the third Sunday in Advent. It is the Sunday we celebrate the theme of Joy. So, I find it more than a little ironic that the lectionary reading for today finds John the Baptist in prison sending his disciples out to ask Jesus, “Are you the one we are to expect? Or should we look for another?” John seems filled with doubt and needing Jesus to give him a concrete answer about his identity. I also believe that being in prison is not someplace I would be able to find any joy and maybe John is struggling with it too. This lesson seems out of place for the theme of joy on this third Sunday in Advent. But then it could be how I think about joy is different than a scriptural definition. Maybe there is more to joy than just happiness.

I know I hope so. In our world today, we are bombarded by too much to do, depressing news all around, difficult life circumstances that threaten to overwhelm us, and anger and resentments fill the air…and yet into this hot mess, scripture teaches that we can still have joy. Why? Because joy is a gift of God that is eternal and is not dependent on our schedules, expectations, or circumstances. I invite you to take some time before Sunday to read through our scripture passages: Isaiah 35:1 – 10 and Matthew 11:2 – 11 as we unpack how they impact us and help us understand a little more about this most wonderful and joyous time of year.

As we continue our journey through Advent, I encourage you to make the time to attend our Sunday worship services. I invite you to attend either the December 17 or December 18 performance of the Cantata, “Tidings of Joy: A Celtic Christmas Celebration.” Join us for one of our Christmas Eve services, 3pm, 5pm, or 11pm, as we welcome the light of Jesus into our world. And finally, at 10am on Christmas Day, spend time hearing the Christmas story told once again through lessons and carols.

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday and I thank you for your prayers, support, and encouragement.

Peace,

Pastor Beth
