Dear Grace Community: What’s in a name? Shakespeare made this phrase famous in Romeo and Juliet. He used this rhetorical question to communicate the idea that external labels or titles given to us do not change our essence. “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet…..”, or so said the Bard.
However, names that offer insight into identity are very important in helping us to understand people. A well-known ice breaker game asks people to attach an adjective to names in order to remember specific characteristics of different people. We may refer to chatty Cathy, or holy Joe, or cautious Charlie, just to offer a few examples. I believe that names are even more significant when we are trying to capture the identity of God. Therefore, Sunday’s message will include a close look at several of the names used in scripture to describe God. The scripture readings for Sunday are Proverbs 22: 1-4 and Matthew 6: 25-34. As you read these passages, think about how your ability to embrace Jesus’ advice in the passage from Matthew is dependent upon how you understand God’s identity. Having a heart and soul understanding of God in Christ is empowering and life-changing.
As I mentioned last week in worship, please consider writing a google review of Grace UMC, either from the church website or from the church Facebook page. People often refer to google reviews when looking for a church home. I look forward to seeing you Sunday! – Pastor Steve
