I have mentioned before that I enjoy my Message Devotional Bible and particularly the reflections from Eugene Peterson that it contains. One such reflection is an analogy from how fruit grows to how we grow spiritually. We cannot force the growth and health of fruit, and if fruit is not consumed within certain time constraints, the fruit will spoil. So it is with us. Only by allowing the Holy Spirit’s free movement, without our force, can our hearts grow spiritually. Moreover, if we do not share the Spirit’s work within us with others, we will watch the decline and spoiling of our spiritual health. Living out our faith is about sharing our lives and blessings with the world around us. I see that so many of you really understand this and it shows!
We are almost into the Lenten season. Pastor Gary has a written Bible study on the Gospel of Mark for Lent. It’s available weekly by email in the Gracevine or ask the office for it. Our Ash Wednesday service is next Wednesday starting at 6:30pm in the sanctuary. I find great comfort and power in this service each year. As a reminder of our mortality, Ash Wednesday puts all of life’s challenges in perspective. It also reminds us of our need for God’s Grace. I hope you will attend the service and invite someone who may be unfamiliar with the tradition of Ash Wednesday to attend.

This Sunday, February 19, is Transfiguration Sunday. The scripture is Matthew 17: 1-9. This passage is familiar to many of us, and I plan to offer some new insights into its meaning. I am working on a message entitled “Shelters To Go.” I depend upon and appreciate your prayers, not just for me but for all of us who lead worship. It is always the Holy Spirit, and not any of us, who makes worship meaningful and life-changing.
